After the coma: Kenny Noyes aims for the half marathon in Barcelona

During a race weekend in July 2015, the professional motorcycle racer Kenny Noyes had a nasty crash that almost killed him. He suffered a traumatic brain injury and was in a coma for over a month – but fortunately, woke up. For the past 8 years he has been working daily and lately he has been improving with the help of the Trionic Veloped. Next year he plans to compete with it in the half marathon of Barcelona.

Kenny Noyes began competing in American dirt track and then progressed to road racing in Spain where he made it to the MotoGP Word Championship for two years. During his racing career he stood on the podium in different classes and championships – until tragedy struck in a race in Motorland in 2015, he had a nasty crash that caused him to end up in a coma. “It was truly a near-death experience. But fortunately, I survived.”

Overcoming adversity

Kenny has become a role model in the world of motorsport after his accident. In the second opportunity he has gotten, he truly loves life, and overcomes adversities and setbacks that he faces with a positive attitude– since the accident these challenges have grown in intensity. “I spent over a month in the intensive care unit, followed by a year in the hospital in minimum consciousness slowly regaining awareness and movement. At first, during my recovery, I really thought I'd be able to race motorcycles again. But as I became more aware of my new situation, I realized that motorcycles had become a part of my past, and I started to see there's a whole life beyond the tracks.”

Recently, he set a goal for himself: to complete the Marathon of Barcelona in 2025. Since the accident, he has worked continuously on improving his motor skills with different types of aids. From not being able to get out of bed, he progressed to being able to move around in a wheelchair. One year later, he was able to stand up and push the wheelchair himself, and soon after he started using simple walking aids. Eight years after the accident, he got the opportunity to try out the Trionic Veloped and is very happy with it.

Promotes physical activity

A Veloped is a modern alternative to a rollator, developed for people with active lifestyles. With innovative and award-winning design, Johan Kuikka, VD at Trionic, states that their Veloped is a world leader when it comes to walking aids for outdoor use.

More than 25 years of experience from cycle sports is what lies behind the development work of this Swedish invention, which was designed at the KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm. The Veloped offers first-class support and unbeatable comfort when walking, hiking or exercising outdoors, and the aim is to promote physical activities and a rich outdoor life. This suited Kenny’s needs perfectly, he says.

”The half marathon is a viable goal”

Kenny states that the Veloped has helped him move forward, and that even though he can’t run yet, he can walk fast; which is what makes him see the half marathon in Barcelona in 2025 as a good and viable goal.

“Today, I’m too slow for the time limit of three hours, but I’m looking forward to shortly be able to start running and be able to complete the race. The Veloped had been a real game changer; it helps me to train off-road without having to worry about the surface, and I will be sharing my journey on my social media, to show that nothing is impossible.”

I think my Veloped is excellent. I walk my dog for an hour every day, which used to cause me a lot of back pain after 20 minutes. Now I can walk without pain. I've also hiked 10 kilometres several times (with my dog). My Veloped is a real eye-catcher…
